The Pelicans' Return

The weather is warm yet quite dreary in Arkansas today. I am home sick and as I opened the drapes, I noticed the pelicans out on the water for the first time this season. Although I may give in at some later date, I refuse to pay the price of a good camera. Therefore, you will just have to take my word that the pelicans have returned to my part of the river. I believe it is actually called Lake Dardanelle. Anyway, here are the pitiful pictures I have taken of them.


Oops, no pelican here. This is what I like to think of as a
wise old bird - I believe a crane. My sixty year old eyes
can make it out better than this pitiful camera lens.

Here's a couple of pelicans separate from the group.

The main group stay huddled on an old log midway between
the bank and Goose Island.
I am very curious about this little group of birds. Where do they go during the summer? When did they start out on their journey to Arkansas? There are many more this year than there were last year but they all look like mature birds - no baby looking ones. They may come from your part of the United States. From some of the pictures I have seen posted already this early winter, I do not blame them for heading south. I will look after them until their return to you in the spring.

    Everything seems to be heading south from here (Canada)at this time of year...the birds and the snowbirds!

    I love pelicans.. My hubby tells me the American ones are brown, I wish I had seen them when I was there? I am not surprised that you wanted to capture them on film. I hope you are feeling better as you read this..

    Our pelicans in Australia are white in colour and huge..they are almost regal. As you I have often wondered about them, I must tell you, I was told they go and nest their young away from humanity?
    I love to watch them fishing. They hold a great amount of fish in their beak. And, they have a great respect for each other, standing back and taking turns when the fishermen throw them scraps. They used to sit on top of the light poles where I once lived, I love those birds.

    Oh darn it all... I'm sorry to hear that you are sick. No fun!!
    I certainly hope that you will be better soon!

    Anyway.. it was a nice treat to be able to see the pelicans :)
    We have them here in the summer.. but I can't recall seeing them in the winter. Perhaps they are flying to your part of the country, hoping for warmer weather.

    We had fog this morning.. but no snow. It's ok by me.
    As long as we have a white Christmas!

My Uncle Morrice Dean - we always say the Dean - was 10 years old when mama and daddy married. He was 11 when I was born and still young enough to get a kick out of pushing a giggling toddler around and around the house in a plain ole' cardboard box. Happy Mothers Day

Somewhere there is a baby picture of me with my Mama and Daddy. They had me lying on a pillow in a straight backed kitchen chair outside Aunt Maggie's little house. They are both looking down on me and the photo does not show their faces. Of all these old pictures I have, I cannot find that one. It makes me sad. I can't find the picture of Greg and Cassie I have titled, "The Fish Story" either. So, instead I am showing a picture of my Mama with her Mama. Except Mama always had to call her Mother. She said she would not answer her unless she did. I always thought that strange as we never called her Grandmother. I don't know why Mama (and therefore me too) was so short. Grandma was fairly tall and Grandpa was a very large man. It is a funny thing about genetics, isn't it? I have uncles over six feet tall and my Daddy was only 5'7". And sometimes those blue eyes pop up in a family of brown eyed children.
