Mama and Rita

Your mind (or at least my mind) does funny things sometimes. For years now I have envisioned Mama looking just like Rita Hayworth. Actually she does not look like her. I do remember Mama wearing bright red lipstick...just like Rita. She pin-curled her hair and styled it...just like Rita. She often had a cigarette in her hand...just like Rita.

The picture of Mama was taken when she was thirteen. You can tell how tiny she was. Just three years later she was married and had a baby on the way. That's the way it was.

You cannot tell much with the picture so small but there are little holes all in Mama's picture. I think one of her four brothers may have used her likeness for a dart board.

  3. I agree, your mom was lovely. My mom pin curled her hair also and wore bright red lipstick! My mom was born in 1929 - what about yours? Rita was always a favorite movie star.

  4. I did not have your email so I am responding here.....thanks for your sweet comment about the blog...actually, I am too dumb to have header pictures, so I'm afraid my blog is very bland!!! I do change the color to match the current post most days!
Yes, my mom was older than yours. I do remember how as soon as mama ate, she put that Revlon Moon Drops lipstick on!

  5. Your mama was beautiful! Just like brothers to use a sister's picture for a dart board.

  6. Your mother was very pretty. I do remember when I grew up most women were married before they were 19 years old and unlike today's young women, they never would have expected to be considered too young to be wives & mothers and acted accordingly. They tended their children and homes and cared for their husbands as best they could on limited budgets. Without the 2nd car, dishwasher, micro-wave,I-Pod, cell phone, with 1 bathroom , and most were happy with this.
My mom also wore her very red lipstick and smoked her cigarettes. It was so fashionable then.

  8. You are too kind! (the Hedy Lamar comment :-) ) You know, your mother is just adorable. She's pretty enough to have been a movie star herself! I used to think of my mother in the same vein as Susan Hayward. They didn't look alike, but there was just something about my mother that made me think of Susan Hayward, who was one of my favorite actresses!
