Spring Break

It is Spring Break around here and all the kids (and teachers) are excited. I do not remember having Spring Break when I was in grade school. Perhaps we did and I have forgotten. We did not start to school until September and then we were out of school in May. Children have so much more to learn nowadays than we did.

As I got older I would spend summers with my OKC Grandma. Grandma was a seamstress and made alterations at a large department store in the City. She owned a 1957 Chevrolet but usually rode a bus  to work. I thought that was pretty neat as a bus that was not a school bus was unheard of where I came from. Sometimes I would ride the bus with her and stay at the store while she worked. She let me pick out a really pretty Catalina swimsuit one summer. She paid a whopping $16 for it and it lasted forever.



Sometimes I stayed at her house while she went off to work. Her neighbor, Mrs. Johnson, checked in on me during the day and let me read her Movietone magazines. I sure wish I had some of those old books. I would love to read again how Elizabeth Taylor took Eddie Fisher away from Debbie Reynolds and then discarded him for Richard Burton. Those movie stars sure led a different life than we did in Arkansas. At least we did not hear about it in the Herald Democrat or the Graphic. That's right, we had two newspapers in our little town.

    Those swim suits are great. For some reason I don't remember a spring break either.

    Here in Arkansas the only break was in the fall and it was call cotton pick in time. I have some years on you so you may not remember that.We did have Easter break and that was in the spring.

    How lucky can you get!! We had a weekly newspaper where I grew up. I just loved those movie magazines and knew all the top stars.. Veronica Lake (remember her hair swooping over one eye), Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Hedy Lamar... oh we had Movie Stars back in those days.

    I LOVE those beautiful bathing suits! So much more class and style than ANYTHING you see today, or saw in the 60's, 70's,80's or 90's either! And love those hairstyles! I would so love to go back in time and just stay in the 50's my whole life! What a great time!

    We didn't have spring break, nor fall break...we had Thanksgiving and Christmas/New years...

My Uncle Morrice Dean - we always say the Dean - was 10 years old when mama and daddy married. He was 11 when I was born and still young enough to get a kick out of pushing a giggling toddler around and around the house in a plain ole' cardboard box. Mama was only 16 when she married and left Oklahoma City and made her home with my daddy in Arkansas. Although she was welcomed by her new family, she was frequently homesick and would send for her baby brother to stay a few weeks with her. Happy Mothers Day

Somewhere there is a baby picture of me with my Mama and Daddy. They had me lying on a pillow in a straight backed kitchen chair outside Aunt Maggie's little house. They are both looking down on me and the photo does not show their faces. Of all these old pictures I have, I cannot find that one. It makes me sad. I can't find the picture of Greg and Cassie I have titled, "The Fish Story" either. So, instead I am showing a picture of my Mama with her Mama. Except Mama always had to call her Mother. She said she would not answer her unless she did. I always thought that strange as we never called her Grandmother. I don't know why Mama (and therefore me too) was so short. Grandma was fairly tall and Grandpa was a very large man. It is a funny thing about genetics, isn't it? I have uncles over six feet tall and my Daddy was only 5'7". And sometimes those blue eyes pop up in a family of brown eyed children.

Happy Birthday Baby Sister

Today is my sister's birthday. I was not quite nine and Mama was twenty five when she was born. Mama was much older at twenty five when she had Freda than I was when I had my daughter at that age. Mama was sick before, during, and for quite a while after this last baby was born. I remember she mostly ate only toast and jelly. Our OKC Grandma came to stay with us while Mama was in the hospital and stayed long enough to help Daddy move into a different house before they brought Freda home. We always rented. Speaking of rent houses...we looked at a really pretty house on Sevier Street while I was still in grade school. It had a big picture window and enough bedrooms that we would not have to share. Daddy said we could not get it because the rent was $100.00 a month. I do not remember what should have been the memorable event of bringing a baby sister home from the hospital.
