Vacation Sunburns

We just returned from our usual summer vacation at Gulf Shores, Alabama. I have no idea why it was so crowded this year. We plan to go back in the fall after the weather cools down.

I never plan ahead well enough to get a tan before going and usually end up with a sunburn. How I have managed to avoid skin cancer this long, I will never know. I am very fair skinned and have had several severe sunburns.

I went camping with my Aunt and Uncle during one of the summers I spent with my OKC Grandma. I think they brought their oldest baby too.

Grandma bought me a new swimsuit from Street's Department Store where she worked. It was constructed like a girdle and lasted forever.

I was having fun and did not realize I was burning until I got back to Grandma's house with water filled blisters on my back. Grandma gave me aspirin for the pain and dipped brown paper sacks in vinegar water and place them on my back. I smelled like a pickle factory but by morning the heat from the burn had lessened and I was on the road to recovery.

  1. ouch! i used to get heat rash in the summertime and my mom would soak a rag in vinegar water and dab it on me, too. :)

  4. Sunburns and summer seem to go hand in hand.

I remember getting so burned in Vegas(where I spent my summers)one summer!
I spent the entire ride home, laying in the back of my grandpas covered truck bed, with vinegar and canned milk on my slathered on my back. Whew! Did I stink! But, by the next morning... I felt so much better, and no pain.

    Love that swimsuit too!

  5. My sis had a swim suit like this. I have never tolerated the sun well, so thankfully no sunburns. An Autumn trip to Gulf Shores will be perfect!

  7. Looks like something Esther Williams wore! Neat that someone has it in their Etsy shop! We saw Esther Williams once with her family at Epcot Center. She was in line right in front of us...really cool!

And about sunburn, my poor little Irish-fair-skinned hubby was sunburned with those awful quarter-sized blisters when he was a baby....his Dad and Uncle took him to the beach! I'm sure sunscreen never crossed their minds! Men! :-)
